  The right tools? During the week we had some problems with our garage door.  It came slightly out of the roller - just slightly so and we thought we just could push it back into alignment.  So we thought but it remained a thought because try as we would, we couldn't push it in and eventually we had to call in the professionals. I was so distraught because that meant the security of the house was somewhat compromised not to mention money leaving our pockets, but what else could we do? The company sent in two men and the job was done in less than five minutes. To say I was shocked would be an understatement.   With all the effort we had put in without positive outcome, I expected it to be resolved only after an operation with lots of bangs and noise to accompany them.   The world, at least a great percentage of it, rejoices with the United States of America on the inauguration of her 46 th president. It is the first in many ways, with President Biden being the oldest president in American history and Kamala Harris sworn in as the first female Black Vice President. We rejoice that finally the world’s superpower is coming on board with having a female in such a position of authority. It lags behind so many countries who have had women as vices or heads of government. Well, rather late than never. I wish Kamala success in her tenure and look forward to seeing a female American president soon. As a woman, I am ecstatic about the development. Madam Vice president proves so many points - that you can aspire to the highest possible position even if you are married, female, black- Asian and of immigrant descent.   She proves to us all that we can have it all as women.     The month of January is known for so many things as the first month of the year; some people have dubbed it ‘Januworry’. It is the time for many to make new year resolutions, the time to start all over, a time of renewed hope and aspirations and for salary earners a very long month to payday. The last pay was probably early in December and without proper planning must have disappeared with the festivities of the season. January is a month of big spending especially if you live in a country where the school calendar runs from January to December. It is time to cough up sizable figures for school fees, uniforms, books, and other expenses. In some other places, it is time to pay the annual rent.       January can also be a very exhausting month, especially for us as women who over December found it difficult to rest for an unavoidable reason or perhaps simply failed to use their license to rest.   The concept of the license is an interesting one – it makes an otherwise illegal action perfectly legal. For example, all that is required to drive is to have a license; nobody will ask you where you trained or if you trained – just produce your license and you are accepted as a legal user of the road.   I am one of those who believe that Nigeria will one day rise from her comatose state to being the giant of Africa not just in name but in deed. I cannot blame those who have given up on the nation. The horrors and killings we live through at home and the disgrace we endure abroad have done nothing to inspire much needed hope. As far back as the ‘80s, we were profiled and searched specially at airports globally for drugs. We thought it was a joke back then.   Today, we are named as one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Actually, we did not attain this unenviable position over night - it came to fit like an ill designed gown after many years of corruption and embezzlement of public funds. I am happy to inform you that I am one kilogram lighter than I was last month. The huffing and puffing is beginning to pay off. I have not lost as much as I would, but I am definitely not where I was before I started this journey.  I counted at least 10,000 steps everyday. Some days I had the required number before noon and I struggled on other days, but I did not miss a single day in one month. I began walking around the neighborhood and I was delighted to meet many people along the way. People are becoming more health conscious. I saw young and old, men and women a whole family, couples, and singles. What a delight! The weight I have lost is not apparent physically, but it is a boost to my mental wellbeing. You must have heard in the news and various social media platforms about the 35-year-old Ghanaian pastor who killed his 27-year-old wife in Florida, USA. Barbara and Sylvester Ofori had been married for some years but it wasn’t working out and the wife had moved out of their matrimonial home about three months before the reported incidence.   It was obviously a crime of passion as he shot her 7 times at her workplace. What a tragedy. What a waste of life on both sides. I commiserate with the family.
