Praise the Lord with me
Praise the Lord with me. I am 50 today. I look back and all I see is the faithfulness of God in my life.
When I was younger (I am still young), the number 50
seemed like a very old number, but now that the Lord has brought me there, it
seems so young. I remember people I grew up with who are no more, and I am
grateful. I realise that my being here today is purely by grace.
Many people measure their lives by achievements, and
it is a good thing to look back and see how much you have accomplished in life.
It gives a sense of satisfaction – a feeling of leaving a mark. I measure mine
by the grace that I have received and the people that surround me.
If you had at any point in the past asked how I am
doing I must have replied by saying that I am blessed. I do not say that glibly
or to sound religious. No, I say it because I truly believe it. I guess people see success from different
perspectives. I say I am blessed because sometimes it does not appear
so; in fact, at a point in my life, I thought I was cursed. I say it to affirm
to myself that in blessing, I am blessed beyond the ordinary.
Any extension or evidence of God’s blessing in my life
are the people He has surrounded me with. I believe firmly that the greatest
blessing a person can have is people. No one can make it alone. I have always
found the term ‘self-made’ absurd and laughable when people rant about how much
they’ve worked hard for their success. I wonder what they would have done if
they had come up with brilliant business plans or even products and people did
not buy them. Would rich people be wealthy without the money of the poor
man? Those who believe that hard work
alone has made them prosperous should ask the man who manually digs wells for a
living and yet remains poor. We are who we are because of the people in our
lives.
I have been blessed from birth by God’s choice of a
family for me, His leading to a family by marriage, His gifts of children to
me, church families in different places, schoolmates from primary to tertiary,
bosses, colleagues, and subordinates in the different places where I have
worked and my wonderful students. I can
truly look back and say, ‘Thank you, Lord’, You are so good to me for the
blessing of people.
Today, I can reflect and say, ‘Thank you’ to you all
for walking the road with me – some for a short distance, others for longer. You
all have made the journey pleasant and bearable through tears and joy.
So, I beg you to bless the name of the Lord with me.
Will you please tell Him that I requested that you thank Him on my behalf. Let
Him know that I am not unmindful of His manifold blessings on my life. Please tell Him that Debola says thank you for
50 wonderful years.
