The Thinking Chair

THE THINKING CHAIR

She sat heavily on the overstuffed chair in her office. What was she thinking furnishing an office with such a chair? Perhaps her subconsciousness knew such a day would come and she would need such a chair or at least her son did. The business was struggling; she was not even such she would reopen. The COVID-19 lockdown had taken its toll on her store. As she made herself comfortable in the chair, she remembered what her son had called the chair - the Dreaming Chair.  He had said it was so comfortable and one could fall asleep and dream beautiful dreams. He always sat in it whenever he came to the office, but he never fell asleep or so he claimed. He always said he was thinking whenever he sat there. Only there was no evidence of all his mental activities – he always forgot.

He always forgot. “Yes”, he said he had a lot of ideas sitting in the chair. Sometimes he even talked about them, but they amounted to nothing beyond being thoughts because within a few days, he had something else to talk about. Her son always had ideas running through his mind.

Then it struck her – she had been doing the same all her life. She always had ideas but never did anything about them. Her son must have learned it from her. Now she really needs ideas to turn things around in her business. Ideas, she needed them! And fast!

She remembered listening to a message by Pastor Sam Adeyemi on the power of ideas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UvWmQHlq2UE

But ideas not put in action were of no use. As she sat, they came hard and fast, the ideas. She had ideas about what she could do once the lockdown was over. She knew she needed to trap those ideas. This was not the time to just fish for ideas only to allow them escape. She was fishing to catch and keep. In fact, she was going to write down all the ways she could trap her ideas. She was never going to be that woman again – the one who allowed her ideas to swim away without trapping and catching them. She began writing.

TRAPPING THEM

Always write your ideas down. Your brain may forget; the paper will not. Always keep writing materials close by in your bags and especially by your bedside. You will be surprised how many ideas come to mind early in the morning or late at night. Trap them by writing them down.

But paper and pen are not the only instruments you can use. Your phone is not just for making calls; most of them have space for taking notes. Use it to trap your ideas now – you know those ones that come when waiting in queues, listening to the news, having lunch etc.

And yes, why just write when you can record? Record your ideas on your phones. Most phones give you opportunity to record voice notes. Record and listen to your ideas later.

She straightened up in her thinking chair and smiled – this is the beginning of great things. She will have ideas; God is still in the business of giving them and she was going to trap them. She was no more going to let her thoughts run wild without trapping them.

She looked at her watch in horror because it was time to pick up her son from school. She has a lot to share with him. Never would they sit in that chair again without having something cogent to show for it.

Have a lovely time trapping your ideas.

  1. Thanks for sharing. How often do we lose the divinely-inspired ideas that cross our minds. Gotta start trapping and catching!
